Sacraments

& Faith Formation

  • BAPTISM & PREPARATION FOR BAPTISM

The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is administered approximately every two months in the parish during Holy Mass. Those requesting baptism for their children need to speak to the parish priest and watch for announcements of forthcoming preparation classes and dates when Baptism will be next administered.

  • The catechetical programme is divided into junior catechism classes and the senior school Confirmation preparation programme.

The junior programme includes preparation for the Sacrament of

Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. The senior programme is a three-and-a-half-year programme leading up to the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation.

  • The Sacrament of Confirmation for young adults is administered by

Archbishop Stephen Brislin or Bishop Sylvester David, in the parish, each year, after Easter.

The Archdiocese of Cape Town requires, as a minimum, for candidates to be 16 years old and that they be thoroughly prepared for the sacrament.

Typically, in the parish, those admitted to the sacrament are in their

Grade 11 year, and have completed three full years of Confirmation

preparation. There is an application process and an interview to determine if prospective candidates are sufficiently prepared.

  • The Archdiocese of Cape Town requires that notice of intention to marry should be given at least six months before the intended date of the wedding, and that proper pre-marriage preparation is completed. The parish priest will give details of pre-marriage courses in the Archdiocese and in the parish, itself.

  • The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) programme is a year-long programme in the parish which starts after Easter and finishes at the Easter Vigil of the following year.

While the RCIA is principally for adults who wish to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church, everyone can benefit from this programme, even if it is to refresh and deepen a knowledge of the Catholic Faith, or to be there to support those who are preparing to be confirmed or received into full communion with the Catholic Church.
